Ásbyrgi Canyon Hike

Hike overview

The Ásbyrgi Canyon hike takes you into the heart of a spectacular, horseshoe-shaped, natural formation that is approximately 3.5 kilometers long and just over a kilometer wide. Located in northeastern Iceland within Vatnajökull National Park, the canyon impresses with its 100-meter-high cliffs. It is home to surprisingly lush vegetation dominated by birch and willow forests, creating a unique atmosphere compared to the rest of Iceland.

Geologists estimate that Ásbyrgi Canyon formed around 10 million years ago following a massive glacial flood from the Jökulsá á Fjöllum River, likely caused by a volcanic eruption under the Vatnajökull ice cap. This green oasis in the heart of arid Iceland offers a hiking experience that is as unexpected as it is memorable.

Difficulties and description of the hike

The trail is well-marked throughout the hike and perfectly maintained, with generally flat terrain and no difficulty. Only a short section with ladders leading to the canyon's banks might impress those sensitive to vertigo.
