The 5 Best Hikes in Norway

Having explored more than 100 Norwegian routes, I have selected my five favourite hikes, prioritising diversity of experience from Lofoten to the Sunnmøre Alps.

1. Hermannsdalstinden Hike

Region: Moskenesøya
Difficulty: Very Hard

The Hermannsdalstinden hike leads to the highest point on the island of Moskenesøya in the Lofoten archipelago, standing at 1,029 meters above sea level. This hike is only for experienced hikers, especially if you plan to complete it in a single day, due to the long distance and significant elevation gain. Along the way, you'll discover diverse and absolutely magnificent landscapes, culminating in an exceptional panorama from the summit.

2. Grytetippen and Keipen Hike

Region: Senja
Difficulty: Hard
Average duration: 6 h
Length: 9.6 km
Elevation gain: 1140 m

The hike to Grytetippen and Keipen leads to two iconic peaks on the island of Senja in Norway. It is considered one of the most beautiful climbs in the region. From these two rocky summits, hikers can enjoy spectacular panoramic views of the northern part of the island, with breathtaking vistas of Ørnfjorden, the picturesque villages of Husøy and Fjordgård, as well as the surrounding legendary peaks such as Segla, Barden, and Breidtinden.

From the summits of Segla or Barden, it's hard to imagine climbing Grytetippen without climbing equipment because the cliffs on its western face are so impressive. However, this climb is not only feasible but also relatively easy from a technical standpoint. It is a must-do for experiencing the wild beauty of Senja.

3. Narvtinden Hike

Elevation gain: 850 m

The hike up Narvtinden leads to one of the most spectacular peaks on Moskenesøya Island in the Lofoten archipelago. Though it is significantly less frequented than other, more iconic peaks on the island, it is no less splendid.

This climb leads to two distinct peaks (677 m and 688 m), which offer exceptional views of the Selfjord, Stormarkpollen bay, and the magnificent Solbjønvatnet lake. The lake accompanies you throughout the hike.

4. Urkeegga Ridge Hike

Region: Møre og Romsdal
Difficulty: Hard

Elevation gain: 960 m

Discover Urkeegga, a spectacular and unforgettable hike in the heart of the Sunnmøre Alps in Norway. Overlooking the picturesque village of Urke and the emerald waters of the Hjørundfjord, this route features a magnificent ridge crossing – Urkeegga literally means “Urke's Ridge.” Immerse yourself in a wild landscape, where the panoramic views of the fjord and the surrounding peaks, so characteristic of the region, will leave you speechless.

5. Raudmelen Hike

The hike to Raudmelen (972 m) is one of the region's must-do activities. It offers spectacular views of the Sognefjord—Norway's longest fjord—and the surrounding mountains. This climb is very popular with locals and offers an authentic immersion in Norwegian nature via an excellent trail dotted with unforgettable viewpoints.

The route begins in a dense, shady forest and gradually opens up to rocky, open landscapes as you approach the summit. Raudmelen is the perfect all-around hike, offering diverse landscapes, a high-quality trail, exceptional views, and few hikers. At the summit is a modern refuge where you can spend the night and continue your adventure. It's a unique experience between fjord and mountain.
