Segla
Rising to an altitude of 639 meters, Segla is the iconic peak of Senja Island in Norway. It is sometimes nicknamed "the sail of Senja" because of its distinctive shape. While its western face appears completely inaccessible, with vertical walls plunging into the sea, the ascent via its southern face is relatively simple, despite a particularly steep slope with no respite.
This popular hike offers exceptional views of the northern part of the island from the summit, including breathtaking panoramas of the Mefjord and Øyfjord and the iconic peaks of Breitinden and Keipen.
Remarks
Best time to go: Mid-June to September on average. See the Norway FAQ for more details.
Parking: There is only one parking lot available at Fjordgård (very large and paid), located behind the Montessori school.
Iconic viewpoint: To get the iconic view of Segla with its spectacular cliffs, you have to climb the nearby peak of Hesten.
Vertigo: The trail always stays at a safe distance from the cliffs, and the summit is relatively wide. However, the particularly steep slope in the second part of the route may pose a problem for people afraid of heights.
Difficulties and description of the hike
The well-marked trail makes navigation easy, allowing you to focus fully on the physical effort. The hike starts gently for a few hundred meters to give you time to warm up. The slope gradually steepens before reaching a small plateau at the base of Segla.
From this point on, there is no longer a defined trail, though you may see a few markings from time to time. Since the route is popular, you will see tracks everywhere in the direction of the summit. The slope then becomes extremely steep, requiring intense physical effort, though only for a relatively short period. Therefore, it is not advisable to undertake this hike in wet or windy weather, as the ground becomes slippery and some sections may be dangerous.
What you'll love
- Exceptional panoramic view: Once you reach the summit, you can enjoy a magnificent view of northern Senja, including the Mefjord and Øyfjord and the steep peaks for which Senja is known.
- A dizzying experience: To the west, the 650-meter cliff plunges directly into the sea. It's a view as spectacular as it is impressive.
- Magical evening light: If you are lucky enough to visit in the evening to see the sunset or midnight sun, you will enjoy softer light and a less crowded summit.
