The 5 Best Family Hikes in Corsica
Having explored over eighty trails in Corsica, I have selected five family-friendly hiking routes for you. Each route showcases the wonders of the 'Isle of Beauty', including vertiginous peaks, authentic villages and coves with turquoise waters.
1. Capo Rosso
Region: Northwest
Difficulty: Moderate
Average duration: 4 h 15 m
Length: 9.5 km
Elevation gain: 570 m
Discover this hike to Capo Rosso (Red cap), the westernmost point of the island. Even the drive from Piana to the trailhead is a magnificent sight! At the top of the promontory stands the Genoese tower of Turghiu, from which your efforts will be rewarded with grandiose views over the gulfs of Porto and Sagone, the Calanques of Piana and the highest Corsican massifs to the east.
The trail is excellent, perfectly laid out and well marked. Apart from a steep couloir towards the summit, there are no particular difficulties. However, expect to find very little shade along the way. For a touch of variety, consider returning via the coastal path, which is an equally pleasant alternative.
2. Sentier des Bruzzi
Region: Southwest
Difficulty: Easy
Average duration: 2 h
Length: 5 km
Elevation gain: 200 m
Take a stroll along the splendid Bruzzi coastal path, a must see hike in the municipality of Pianottoli-Caldarello. This itinerary takes you around the peninsula nestled between the superb Chevanu and Arbitru bays. You'll be surrounded by dense maquis vegetation, punctuated by granite rocks sculpted by the wind into unique shapes known as Taffoni. Let your imagination run wild as you contemplate these fantastically shaped rocks. Along the way, you'll discover many wild coves, including the famous Coral Beach.
The walk is very pleasant and not particularly difficult. Although it is not marked, a few directional signs will guide you along the way.
3. Coscione plateau
Region: Southeast
Difficulty: Easy
Average duration: 3 h 15 m
Length: 7.9 km
Elevation gain: 180 m
Discover the plateau of Coscione, a very special place in the Corsican mountains. Unlike the usual hiking trails, which are often arid and rocky, this excursion through the Coscione plateau plunges you into a lush landscape, dotted with streams and relatively flat. Horses, cows and pigs roam freely in this unspoiled environment.
The road leading to the plateau, at an altitude of 1,500 meters, is bumpy and full of potholes over a distance of around ten kilometers. A conventional car, without 4WD, can still manage it. At the end of the road, you'll reach an old refuge, the starting point for several trails that explore this wild and unspoiled plateau. The trails are all in excellent condition, with the occasional signpost. On the other hand, they are unmarked and there are many intersections, so a GPS device could be useful to avoid getting lost. The itinerary suggested here is the widest loop and allows a complete discovery of this enchanting place.
4. Monacia d’Aullène
Region: Southwest
Difficulty: Easy
Average duration: 3 h 15 m
Length: 6.9 km
Elevation gain: 360 m
This walk along the heritage trail of Monacia d'Aullène will take you back in time to the Mesolithic era. You'll discover the fascinating orii, troglodytic shelters nestled in the tafoni, cavities carved out of the rock by wind erosion. Used at different times as dwellings, storehouses or burial sites, these sites bear witness to a rich historical and cultural past.
Of the fifty orii in the Monacia d'Aullène area, three are accessible along the Heritage Trail. But don't miss the most impressive, the oriu de Grussetu, perched high up off the usual tourist route. This majestic structure dominates the sea and offers breathtaking views over the south of the island.
The trail is in excellent condition throughout. Although unmarked, it is clearly signposted all along the Heritage Trail loop. Then get ready for a relatively steep climb dotted with cairns to reach the oriu de Grussetu.
5. Ruins of Occi
Region: Northwest
Difficulty: Easy
Average duration: 2 h
Length: 4.7 km
Elevation gain: 310 m
The abandoned village of Occi, dating back to the 14th century, sits majestically above the charming village of Lumio.
Reaching this historic site is as much a stroll as a hike. The well-maintained trail is signposted with yellow markers and directional signs for easy navigation. All along the way, you'll be rewarded with breathtaking views of the Gulf of Calvi, the Bay of Algajo and the Sant'Ambrogio marina, a magnificent natural spectacle.
Corsica is full of wonderful family walks. Have a look at the following hiking sheets, that might be perfect for you: Radule waterfall, Aitone waterfalls, Piscia di Gallu waterfall, Trou de la bombe, Pigna - Sant'Antonino, etc.
