Ruins of Occi

The Occi Ruins hike takes you to an abandoned 14th-century village perched 380 meters above sea level in Lumio, Balagne. This easy, family-friendly hike follows an old mule track and offers spectacular views of the Gulf of Calvi, Algajo Bay, and Sant'Ambrogio Marina. Once there, you will find about twenty ruined houses and the fully restored Annunziata Chapel.

Remarks

Parking: Parking is limited in Lumio. It is recommended to park at the entrance to the village rather than in the center, especially on Wednesdays when parking is particularly difficult due to the market, which runs from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

History: The village of Occi was founded in the 14th century by people fleeing Saracen raids on the coast. By 1852, the village had only 60 residents. It was gradually abandoned and lost its last inhabitant, Félix Giudicelli, in 1918.

Difficulties and description of the hike

This hike does not present any particular difficulties and is accessible to most people. The first part of the route is a relatively steep climb, which accounts for the entire elevation gain.

The route follows a wide, well-maintained old mule track with yellow markings and directional signs to help you find your way.
