GR20 Stage 6 – Ciottulu di i Mori to Manganu

Hike overview

The sixth stage of the GR20 north-south route connects the Ciottulu di i Mori refuge (1,991 m) to the Manganu refuge (1,601 m) over a distance of 24.6 kilometers, making it the longest stage of the trek. However, don't be intimidated by the distance. Unlike the previous stages, which were very technical and rocky, this stage is relatively easy. It consists mainly of descents and slight inclines, which allow you to enjoy the scenery.

The route passes through various landscapes, including the natural pools of Golo, the shady Valdu Niellu forest, the Castellu di Vergio resort, and the sublime Lake Nino, surrounded by green pozzines — the real jewel of this stage — before reaching the refuge after walking across the Camputile plateau.

Remarks

Possibility of splitting the stage: This long stage can be split in two by stopping at the Castellu di Vergio ski resort, which is located halfway through the route. There are several lodging options (refuge, campsite, and hotel). The campsite grocery store offers a variety of supplies, but there is no ATM. Alternatively, the sheepfolds in Vaccaghia, located 30 minutes before Manganu, also offer accommodations.

Description and difficulties of the hike

This stage is notable for its length rather than its technical difficulty. With 710 meters of elevation gain and 1,100 meters of elevation loss spread over 24.7 kilometers, physical and mental endurance is more important than technical skill.

The Golo and the Valdu Niellu Forest

The first part of the hike descends gradually alongside the Golo River on easy terrain. From the outset, you will cross the Golo, the longest river in Corsica, which rises near the Ciottulu di i Mori refuge. Enjoy the many natural pools that dot the route in this picturesque, refreshing setting. The descent takes you to the Radule waterfall and sheepfold, then continues through the Valdu Niellu biological reserve forest to the road and the small Castellu di Vergio ski resort. Here, you can recharge at a lodge, campsite, or grocery store.

The ascent to Lake Nino

After this shaded section, the trail continues on a slight incline for several kilometers before reaching the only significant climb of the route. After climbing 500 meters, you will first reach Bocca San Pedru (1,452 m), then Bocca a Reta (1,881 m), the highest point of the day. From these passes, you will have a spectacular view of Lake Nino and its pozzines, the wet meadows that are emblematic of the region.

Crossing the Camputile Plateau

Next, there is a long, six-kilometer walk across the Camputile plateau alongside the Tavignano. The wild atmosphere and beauty of the landscape make up for this seemingly endless section after the many kilometers already covered. When you reach the Vaccaghia sheepfold, a final half-hour effort is necessary before you can enjoy a well-deserved rest at the Manganu refuge.

What you'll love

  • The natural pools of the Golo River that mark the initial descent, offering crystal-clear pools perfect for a refreshing swim.
  • The crossing of the Valdu Niellu forest, a preserved biological reserve that provides welcome coolness, with its hundred-year-old Laricio pines and wind-swept trees.
  • Lake Nino and its pozzines, those typically Corsican green wet meadows where horses, cows, and pigs roam in semi-freedom.
  • The bucolic and soothing atmosphere of the Camputile plateau, offering a welcome transition after the technical and mineral stages of the previous days.
