The 5 Best Via Ferrata in the Dolomites
Having explored more than 20 routes across the Dolomites, I have selected my five favourite Via Ferrata.
1. Via Ferrata Lipella - Tofana di Rozes Summit
Hiking Difficulty: Hard
Via Ferrata Difficulty: C/D (Difficult)
Average duration: 8 h
Length: 11.6 km
Elevation gain: 1320 m
The Giovanni Lipella Via Ferrata is one of the great equipped routes in the Dolomites. It ascends the west face of Tofana di Rozes (3,225 m), linking the spectacular Castelletto gallery, long exposed ledges, and an impressive rocky amphitheater. The view from the summit is exceptional and takes in the Tofane, the Lagazuoi, the Cristallo, and all the peaks of the Cortina d'Ampezzo region.
This long, demanding hike is reserved for fit hikers who are comfortable with rugged terrain and via ferrata. It is undoubtedly one of the three most beautiful routes I have ever hiked in the Dolomites.
2. Via Ferrata Ivano Dibona
Hiking Difficulty: Hard
Via Ferrata Difficulty: B (Moderatly difficult)
Average duration: 7 h
Length: 8.9 km
Elevation gain: 1180 m
The via ferrata Ivano Dibona runs along the lengthy southern ridge of the Cristallo massif, northeast of Cortina d'Ampezzo. The route features numerous equipped sections, scenic hiking trails, tunnels, and a spectacular 30-meter suspension bridge made famous by the movie Cliffhanger.
While not technically difficult, the route is demanding due to its length, altitude, and exposure to the void and the elements (wind and storms). Since the Son Forca chairlift and Rifugio Lorenzi closed in 2016, foot traffic has dropped significantly. Today, it is one of the major via ferrata routes in the Dolomites where you can still hike in relative tranquility. It is a magnificent immersion in typical high-mountain landscapes and one of my favorite routes in the Dolomites.
3. Via Ferrata Ra Gusela and Averau
Hiking Difficulty: Moderate
Via Ferrata Difficulty: A/B (Easy)
Average duration: 4 h 30
Length: 9 km
Elevation gain: 720 m
This route starts at Passo Giau (2,236 m) and combines two via ferratas in the Nuvolau range. It takes you to two peaks: Monte Nuvolau (2,574 m) and Monte Averau (2,648 m), the highest point in the massif. From each summit, the route offers an exceptional 360° panorama of the Dolomite peaks: Tofane, Cristallo, Sorapiss, Pelmo, Civetta, and Marmolada.
Thanks to its varied terrain, succession of peaks, and rich views, this circuit is considered one of the most beautiful in the region. It also has two mountain huts along the route, including Nuvolau, the oldest in the Dolomites (built in 1883).
4. Via Ferrata Innerkofler - Monte Paterno
Hiking Difficulty: Moderate
Via Ferrata Difficulty: A/B (Easy)
Average duration: 4 h 30
Length: 9.5 km
Elevation gain: 650 m
The Via Ferrata Innerkofler, also known as De Luca, named after the two protagonists of a World War I battle fought on these rock faces. It ascends Monte Paterno (2,744 m) via its north face, right in the heart of the Tre Cime Nature Park.
This route is suitable for beginners and combines military tunnels, long exposed ledges, and a summit that offers one of the most beautiful views of the north faces of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo in the Dolomites. The downside is that it gets very crowded during peak season, with possible wait times at the equipped sections.
5. Via Ferrata Merlone - from Lago d'Antorno to Cima Cadin
Hiking Difficulty: Moderate
Via Ferrata Difficulty: B/C (Moderatly difficult)
Average duration: 6 h
Length: 9.6 km
Elevation gain: 1010 m
This route starts at Lago d'Antorno and climbs Cima Cadin Nord-Est via the Merlone Via Ferrata. Opened in 1966, the via ferrata is located in the Cadini di Misurina Massif, a particularly impressive collection of towers and spires.
The route combines an approach hike to Rifugio Fonda Savio with a very steep and, quite frankly, dizzying via ferrata. Numerous metal ladders are strung out throughout the ascent. From the summit, you can admire the Tre Cime di Lavaredo and the main massifs of the Sesto Dolomites
