The 5 Best Off-the-Beaten Track Hikes in Corsica
Having explored more than 80 trails in Corsica, I present my top five favourite hikes off the beaten track. This selection prioritises authenticity and tranquillity, far from the crowds of the GR20 and other popular sites.
1. Monte Senino Hike
Region: Northwest
Difficulty: Hard
Average duration: 4 h
Length: 5.9 km
Elevation gain: 680 m
Perched between the Gulfs of Girolata and Porto, Monte Senino boasts one of the most spectacular 360° panoramic views on the island. The climb passes through Punta Castellacciu (587 m), whose views alone are reward enough for the effort, before reaching Monte Senino's summit at 618 meters. Throughout the hike, the scenery is breathtaking: the Scandola Nature Reserve, the ever-present Mediterranean Sea, and mountain ridges are revealed as you progress.
Don't be fooled by the route's modest elevation gain and distance; this hike is technically difficult and requires experience with rough terrain.
2. Capu a Cuccula Hike
Region: Northwest
Difficulty: Moderate
Average duration: 3 h 45 m
Length: 6.1 km
Elevation gain: 650 m
This hike starts at the Vergio Pass and takes you to Capu a Cuccula, whose 2,049-meter summit overlooks a tranquil, wild landscape. The ascent gradually reveals spectacular views: the majestic Paglia Orba and Capu Tafunato to the north and the Gulf of Porto, Capu d'Orto, and Capu di u Vitullu to the west. Though unmarked, this route is relatively accessible and deserves to be better known.
3. Girolata via Punta di a Literniccia Hike
Region: Northwest
Difficulty: Hard
Average duration: 6 h 30 m
Length: 14.3 km
Elevation gain: 870 m
This magnificent loop trail leads to the fishing village of Girolata via Punta di a Literniccia, which rises to 778 meters. Accessible only by boat or on foot, Girolata is a UNESCO World Heritage Site dominated by an imposing 16th-century fort.
The route follows a wide ridge with sea views on both sides, offering exceptional vistas of the Gulf of Girolata and the Scandola Nature Reserve. If you are in good physical condition and have enough time, this route is much more interesting than the classic postman's trail. The appeal of this hike goes far beyond a simple visit to the village.
4. A Maniccia Hike
Region: Central
Difficulty: Hard
Average duration: 6 h
Length: 10.2 km
Elevation gain: 1150 m
Important: Since 2023, the Restonica Valley road has been inaccessible by car or shuttle bus beyond the Frasseta Bridge. This considerably lengthens the hike.
The hike from A Maniccia leads to a 2,496-meter peak in the heart of the Rotondo Massif in Corsica. Unlike the Restonica Valley, which teems with tourists in the summer, the Rinoso Valley, which leads to the summit, is a tranquil haven with few visitors.
After sharing the trail with crowds heading to the famous Melo and Capitello lakes, you can quickly escape to wild, unspoiled landscapes for a demanding but remarkably rewarding climb.
5. Punta di a Vacca Morta Hike
Region: Southeast
Difficulty: Easy
Average duration: 2 h
Length: 3.7 km
Elevation gain: 290 m
The Punta di a Vacca Morta hike takes you to a 1,316-meter-high peak in the heart of the Ospedale Forest. This accessible climb is rewarded with a magnificent 360-degree panorama. From the top, you can take in the Bay of Porto-Vecchio, Alta Rocca, Lake Ospedale, and the majestic Bavella peaks. On a clear day, you can even see the coast of Sardinia in the distance.
The moderate elevation gain and short distance make this hike an excellent choice for enjoying spectacular views without significant physical exertion.
