Monte Rotondo from Pietra Piana Hike
Hike overview
At an altitude of 2,622 meters, Monte Rotondo is the iconic peak of Corsica's second-highest mountain range. From this central vantage point, hikers can enjoy a 360-degree panorama, which many Corsican mountaineers consider to be the most spectacular on the island. The view encompasses both the east and west coasts, as well as legendary peaks such as Paglia Orba and Monte Cinto.
The route from the Pietra Piana refuge is relatively short and much less demanding than the ascent from the Restonica Valley. However, note that the refuge is located on the GR20 and is not accessible by road. This alpine hike promises a memorable experience with the discovery of Lake Bettaniella, Corsica's largest natural lake, followed by an ascent through a vast scree slope to the summit.
Remarks
Depart from the Pietra Piana refuge: This hike is for hikers trekking the GR20 or staying at the refuge. Access to the refuge requires a prior hike.
The Helbronner Shelter: This small hut can comfortably accommodate two to three people overnight. Sleeping at the summit allows you to enjoy an unforgettable sunset and sunrise.
Difficulties of the hike
The hike starts at the Pietra Piana refuge (1,842 m), on the famous GR20 trail. Although the ascent from this point is significantly easier and shorter than from the Restonica Valley, it remains relatively technical. The first part of the hike is not particularly difficult until you reach Lake Bettaniella (2,321 m), which takes just over an hour.
After that, the climb becomes steeper across a vast scree slope to the summit. For hikers arriving from the GR20 and accustomed to its excellent red and white markings, it is important to note that the route is not marked, so you will need to follow the cairns.
