GR20 Stage 8 – Alpine Variant

Hike overview

The eighth stage of the GR20 north-south trail connects the Petra Piana (1,842 m) and Onda (1,430 m) mountain huts. There are two distinct routes: the classic route through the Manganello Valley and this alpine variant along the ridges. This option is almost three kilometers shorter and winds along the ridges of Serra Bianca and Serra di Tenda. It reveals exceptional, 360-degree panoramic views of the Monte Rotondo and Monte d'Oro massifs.

At only 3.5 hours, this route is accessible to hikers who have already conquered the technical challenges of previous GR20 stages. It is an attractive alternative to the main route because it avoids the long descent into the valley while offering more spectacular views.

Remarks

Monte Rotondo extension: Take advantage of this stage's short length to add the ascent of Monte Rotondo (2,622 m), Corsica's second-highest peak, to your itinerary. This challenging hike should be done in the morning before departure and rewards you with an exceptional panorama at the summit.

Difficulties and description of the hike

The alpine variant follows yellow markings that are distinct from the classic red and white markings of the GR20. It is generally less demanding than the main route, with only 380 meters of elevation gain and 790 meters of elevation loss over approximately 3.5 hours. However, it requires experience with rough mountain terrain, which should not be difficult for hikers who have completed the northern section of the GR20.

After a short, false-flat descent from the refuge, the trail rapidly climbs to Bocca Manganello (1,790 m), the starting point for the ridge crossing. From this pass, the route winds along the ridges, alternating between the east and west slopes. There are several steep passages where you will need to use your hands before reaching Pointe de Pinzi Corbini, the highest point of the stage at 2,021 meters. From this summit, you can enjoy a 360° panorama of Monte Rotondo to the north, Monte d'Oro to the southeast, and the Mediterranean Sea on the horizon.

The descent from the summit to Bocca a Meta (1,885 m) is steep and slightly dizzying, particularly in strong winds. Generally, it is best to avoid this variant on windy days because the wind is stronger on the exposed ridges. The classic route offers more protection. The trail then climbs back up toward Serra di Tenda before switching slopes and becoming easier to walk on. A final grassy descent leads to Bocca d'Oreccia (1,427 m), and then to the Onda Refuge, which is located below on a plateau.

What you'll love

  • The exceptional views along the route of Monte Rotondo, Monte d'Oro, and, on a clear day, the Gulf of Sagone to the west.
  • Progressing along the ridge in an incomparable alpine atmosphere that alternates between east and west slopes reveals changing perspectives with each pass crossed.
  • The relative tranquility of this route, which is less popular than the classic route, ideal for enjoying the calm and beauty of the Corsican mountains.
