GR20 Stage 5 – Tighiettu to Ciottulu di i Mori

Hike overview

This hike is the fifth stage of the GR20 north-south trail. It connects the Tighjettu refuge (1,680 m) to the Ciottulu di i Mori refuge (1,991 m), which is the highest on the trek. Following the intense efforts of the previous day, this stage offers relative respite in the form of a shorter, less technical route.

First, the trail descends to the Ballone sheepfolds and crosses the pleasant Albertacce communal forest. Then, it gradually climbs to the Bocca di Foggialle pass (1,962 m). From there, the Ciottulu di i Mori refuge comes into view in a spectacular setting, nestled at the foot of the majestic Paglia Orba (2,525 m) and Capu Tafunatu (2,335 m) peaks.

Remarks

The highest refuge on the trek: Located at an altitude of 1,991 metres, the Ciottulu di i Mori refuge is the highest on the GR20. Nights can be cool, especially at the beginning and end of the season. Bring a warm sleeping bag!

Ascent of Paglia Orba: Experienced hikers who are comfortable with vertiginous passages can climb the iconic 2,525-meter summit of Paglia Orba from the refuge (see the Paglia Orba hike description). The climb is technically very demanding and is only suitable for people with solid mountain experience. Allow around 4 hours for the round trip. The view from the summit is one of the most majestic in Corsica.

Difficulties of the hike

The route begins with a gentle 30-minute descent to the Ballone sheepfolds (1,440 m), followed by a nearly flat two-kilometer traverse through the Albertacce forest. The trail is undulating and shaded, providing welcome relief after the rocky terrain of previous days.

The terrain then becomes much more challenging with a steep and sustained 600-meter climb over 1.5 kilometers, which takes nearly two hours. The trail is rocky with slabs and boulders to cross until you reach the Bocca di Foggialle Pass (1,963 m). Once you reach the pass, it's just one kilometer of easy walking to the refuge.

What you'll love

  • The natural pools and basins along the Crucetta stream, perfect for a refreshing swim.
  • The peaceful crossing of the Albertacce communal forest, a shaded and relaxing section that contrasts nicely with the scree slopes of the previous days.
  • The spectacular setting of the Ciottulu di i Mori refuge, at the foot of two iconic peaks: Paglia Orba, nicknamed 'the queen of the Corsican mountains', and Capu Tafunatu, which has an impressive 35-metre-wide natural hole that is visible from the refuge.
