Aitone Waterfalls Hike

Hike overview

The Aitone Waterfalls are a series of small waterfalls and natural pools nestled in the heart of the majestic Aitone Forest. The forest is home to Laricio pines, chestnut trees, and beeches.

This short, family-friendly walk leads to an enchanting, refreshing, and soothing site, which is ideal for a nature break during a stay in Corsica. However, be aware that the site is very popular and attracts many visitors during the high season.

Remarks

My advice: Visit early in the morning to avoid the crowds. Don't forget to explore the area downstream, where you'll find other waterfalls and more secluded spots.

Bonus: The picturesque D84 road connecting Porto to Évisa allows you to reach the starting point from the west and is absolutely magnificent. It is one of the most beautiful roads in Corsica.

Swimming: Keep in mind that even in summer, the water remains cool, rarely exceeding 10 °C.

An alternative starting point in Évisa. You can start this hike from the village of Évisa by following the Châtaigneraie trail (part of the Mare a Mare Nord). This walk takes about 2.5 to 3 hours round trip. The trail is marked and dotted with information panels about the local heritage.

Difficulties of the hike

This walk is very easy and accessible to all, including families with young children. The forest trail follows a wide, gently sloping path, which leads to stone steps descending to the Aitone stream and pools. The route is well marked and presents no technical difficulties.

What you'll love

  • The magical atmosphere of the Aitone Forest with its Laricio pine trees, some of which reach heights of over 50 meters.
  • The many waterfalls and natural pools with emerald green waters that are perfect for a refreshing swim.
  • The remains of old chestnut flour mills that are witnesses to rural life in days gone by.
