Girolata via the postman’s path
The hike along the Postman's Trail leads to the fishing hamlet of Girolata, one of the last villages in Corsica that is accessible only on foot or by boat. Built at the foot of an imposing 16th-century Genoese fort, it is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The historic trail is named after Guy Ceccaldi, the postman who used this path daily to deliver mail to the inhabitants of Girolata until 2006. It is the most direct route to Girolata.
The hike offers remarkable views of the Gulf of Girolata and the wild coastline and passes by the magnificent Tuara Beach. However, be aware that you will likely encounter many people upon arrival, especially during the summer.
Remarks
Parking: Free parking is available at Col de la Croix (Bocca a Croce) on the D81, about 20 km from Porto towards Galeria.
Alternative: For a longer, wilder hike with far fewer people, discover Girolata via the magnificent loop trail of Punta di a Literniccia, revealing a wide variety of landscapes.
Difficulties and description of the hike
The postman's trail is a moderate difficulty hike covering nearly 10 kilometers with a total elevation gain of 560 meters. Starting at Col de la Croix, the well-marked trail is very accessible, although it is slightly steep in places, especially after Tuara Beach along the coastal route.
For the return trip, you can take an alternative route that leads back to the beach by going slightly inland. The trail offers very little shade, so be sure to bring plenty of water in hot weather!
What you'll love
- The magnificent views of the Gulf of Girolata, which gradually reveal themselves as you approach the village.
- The charm of Girolata, a car-free village where you can enjoy the turquoise waters of the beach or sample Corsican specialties while gazing at the exceptionally clear sea.
- Tuara Beach, a beautiful, secluded cove located halfway along the route that's ideal for swimming or picnicking.
