Oriente Lake Hike

The hike to Lake Oriente leads to one of the most beautiful lakes in Corsica. Nestled at an altitude of over 2,000 meters in a mineral cirque at the foot of Monte Rotondo (2,622 m), the island's second highest peak.

Unlike the neighboring lakes of Melo and Capitello, Oriente remains unspoiled by crowds, offering a peaceful getaway in a wild and majestic setting. Be sure to extend your walk a few hundred meters beyond the lake to see it from its best angle!

Remarks

Parking: There is no parking lot at the trailhead, which is located about 100 meters after the Timozzo Bridge. The few spaces available along the D623 can be counted on one hand. It is essential to arrive early in the morning if you hope to find a spot.

Difficulties of the hike

This challenging hike involves an elevation gain of 1,050 meters over a distance 10 kilometers round trip. The ascent is steady but sustained and punctuated by numerous switchbacks when the slope steepens. The route begins in the Corte Restonica forest and remains shaded for about an hour and a half until reaching the Timozzo sheepfolds. Then, it continues through increasingly rocky terrain.

The trail is in excellent condition and does not present any technical difficulties. Although it is not marked, it is easy to follow thanks to the numerous cairns that mark the route.
