Traveling in Scotland – Tips and Itineraries
Hiking in Scotland: Which Option to Choose?
Scotland offers great flexibility when planning your trip. You can opt for a tour through the iconic landscapes of the Highlands or choose to explore your favorite region from a fixed base. The distances between regions are reasonable (with a maximum travel time of two to four hours between major hiking areas), making it easy to tailor your stay to your preferences.
There are several possible approaches:
- A road trip to experience the diversity of the Highlands
- A star-shaped trip to explore a region in depth
- A combination of the two, changing your base several times during your trip
Whichever option you choose, Scotland will charm you with its abundance of trails and the untamed beauty of its mountains.
Hiking on the Move
If you dream of a road trip through Scotland's most iconic landscapes, here are two must-see tours:
A condensed itinerary to explore the highlights of the Highlands in a week.
A complete crossing of the Highlands, from the Isle of Arran in the south to the remote and wild regions in the north.
These tours immerse you in the heart of Scotland's diverse landscapes. They include challenging hikes but can be adapted to a more family-friendly level.
Accommodation options:
- Camping and camper vans: Ideal for this type of trip since it is not usually necessary to book campsites. You have complete freedom to adapt to weather conditions and your mood.
- Hotels and guesthouses: A comfortable alternative that requires more rigorous planning and offers less flexibility in the face of unpredictable weather.
Star Hiking
Would you prefer a fixed base from which to explore the surrounding trails each day? Here are some of the best regions for this type of trip:
1️⃣ Assynt
A wild region with spectacular landscapes, characterized by isolated mountains and a myriad of lochs and lochans (small lochs). It's not very touristy, making it ideal for a two-day getaway or a full week.
💙 It's my favorite place in Scotland!
2️⃣ Isle of Skye
A must-see destination, certainly touristy, but full of exceptional hikes suitable for all levels. A week there allows you to enjoy it to the fullest.
3️⃣ Torridon Valley
Home to some of Scotland's most iconic mountains (Liathach, Beinn Eighe, Beinn Alligin), this valley offers a variety of spectacular routes. It's ideal for a two- to three-day immersion.
4️⃣Isle of Arran
Nicknamed "Scotland in miniature", this island is an excellent introduction to the diversity of the Scottish landscape. A two- to three-day stay is perfect for exploring its riches.
5️⃣Glencoe Valley
In the heart of the Highlands, this valley is a true paradise for hikers, with a multitude of trails to explore. Allow two to three days to enjoy it fully.
