Capo di Muro Hike

Hike overview

The Capo di Muro hike is a journey of discovery around a rugged peninsula that separates the Ajaccio and Valinco gulfs. This circular route crosses the Corsican maquis and skirts the coastline, revealing exceptional panoramic views of the two gulfs and the rock formations sculpted by erosion.

First, the trail takes you to the Madonnella chapel, nestled in a stunning granite landscape. Then, it continues to the impressive Genoese tower of Capu di Muro, a historic monument that offers breathtaking views of the Gulf of Ajaccio.

Remarks

Genoese tower: Due to bad weather, access to the interior of the Genoese tower has been closed to the public since 2022 due to the risk of collapse. Check the current status before your visit, as this situation may change depending on restoration work.

Difficulties of the hike

The trail is well-maintained and accessible to all, with no technical difficulties. However, it is not marked; you will find signs indicating the direction to follow here and there. Be particularly careful after passing the Madonnella Chapel (when hiking clockwise), as the route can be difficult to spot at this point. Follow the cairns near the shore to find your way.

What you'll love

  • The Genoese tower of Capo di Muro: Built between 1580 and 1617 and listed as a historic monument. Its summit terrace offers an exceptional panorama of the gulfs of Ajaccio and Valinco.
  • The Madonnella Chapel: A place of pilgrimage and a haven of peace, ideal for a contemplative break.
  • The rocky coastline with its spectacular granite formations, eroded by the elements. This area is particularly impressive around the chapel and lighthouse.
