Uomo di Cagna Hike
Hike overview
The Uomo di Cagna hike leads to one of southern Corsica's most fascinating geological curiosities: two imposing granite blocks balanced at an altitude of 1,217 meters. Their silhouette evokes a stone sentinel watching over the mountain.
The climb takes you through scrubland, holm oak forests, and granite boulders before offering splendid panoramic views of the southern part of the island from the summit. The trail is well-maintained up to the summit, where a few easy climbing passages lead to the base of the Uomo di Cagna.
Remarks
Access to the summit: Climbing the Uomo di Cagna rock without climbing equipment is not possible. However, the hike provides access to a rocky platform at the foot of the bilboquet, which offers spectacular views.
Description and difficulties of the hike
The hike requires sustained physical effort due to the 750-meter elevation gain. The ascent begins with an easy, steady climb on a marked trail through scrubland and a forest of pines, holm oaks, and arbutus trees.
However, the last 300 meters change radically: the markings disappear, giving way to an imposing granite boulder field where you must find your own way between huge granite boulders. This final phase requires you to scramble over the rocks to reach the platform at the foot of the famous Bilboquet. This route can be tricky and requires concentration and caution to avoid falling between the boulders. Those prone to vertigo or uncomfortable with difficult terrain can stop at the end of the marked trail, which still offers a magnificent view.
It is essential to check the weather before setting off. Mount Cagna can become cloud-covered very quickly, which makes progress on the rocks extremely dangerous. In rainy weather, the boulders become slippery, so hiking is not recommended.
