GR20 Stage 1: From Calenzana to Ortu di u Piobbu
The first stage of the GR20, traveling from north to south, immediately immerses you in the challenging world of this legendary trek. Starting in the village of Calenzana (310 meters), the first day takes you to the Ortu di u Piobbu refuge (1,548 m).
With an elevation gain of 1,530 meters, this stage is a real warm-up that sets the tone for the rest of the route. It is long and challenging, but it offers spectacular views of the Bay of Calvi and the Balagne region. From the first switchbacks, you will leave the fragrant Corsican maquis behind and plunge into the mineral world of the mountains, discovering the technical passages that are characteristic of the GR20.
Remarks
Refuge fire: Since the 2019 fire that destroyed the Ortu di u Piobbu refuge, only tent sites are available. The refuge has been replaced by several small, scattered buildings that are functional but do not offer the option to book an overnight stay in permanent accommodations.
Difficulties and description of the hike
This first stage is physically demanding, with 1,530 meters of elevation gain concentrated over 10.8 kilometers. The day begins with an old mule track through the maquis and forest. Then, it becomes steeper with switchbacks up to Bocca u Saltu (1,250 m). Beyond this pass, the terrain changes radically; the trail crosses numerous rocky passages where you will need to use your hands. Some sections are equipped with chains to secure progress on the granite slabs.
Another challenge of this stage is the heat and sun exposure. Three-quarters of the route is in open terrain with few shaded areas. The only source of drinking water is the Ortiventi fountain, located at an altitude of 550 meters, about 40 minutes into the hike. Therefore, it is essential to set off with enough water to last the remaining five hours of walking.
What you'll love
