Klovane
Overlooking the spectacular Oldedalen Valley in Norway, the Klovane hike takes you to a 982-meter peak offering unforgettable views. Although challenging, this climb reveals a unique panorama of the emerald green waters of Oldevatnet, majestic mountains, and surrounding glaciers.
Klovane is an excellent choice for experienced hikers seeking a physical challenge and stunning vistas in the heart of one of Norway's most beautiful valleys.
Remarks
Parking: Paid parking (50 NOK in 2025), is available by crossing the Oldevatnet campsite.
Best time of year to hike: From mid-June to September, on average. See the Norway FAQ for more details.
Camping at the summit: Although the climb is steep, the summit offers several relatively flat areas where you can pitch a tent. It's a rare and exceptional place to spend the night while facing the glaciers.
Difficulties of the hike
Don't be fooled by this hike's modest distance of 5.6 km. The Klovane route is demanding, characterized by an extremely steep and constant slope along almost the entire trail. The trail climbs directly, a trait common to some Norwegian routes that favor straight lines over gentler switchbacks. Expect to gain around 400 meters of elevation per kilometer in the steepest sections.
The hike also includes several sections of scrambling, the most difficult parts are secured by chains.
Although the trail is unmarked, it is very well laid out and easy to follow. A single marked junction simplifies navigation, allowing you to focus fully on the physical challenge!
What you'll love
- Spectacular 360° views from the summit, taking in the Oldedalen Valley, Lake Oldevatnet and the imposing surrounding glaciers, including Melkevollsbreen.
- The sense of achievement after climbing such a steep slope – a real reward for those who love a sporting challenge.
- Total immersion in nature: Enjoy the tranquility of this relatively uncrowded route, a welcome contrast to the crowds of tourist in the beautiful but popular Oldedalen Valley.
