Hatten
Hatten (406 m) is a peak located near Jørpeland, in Rogaland County, Norway. It offers hikers breathtaking views of the famous Lysefjord, a true natural gem of the country. The route is appealing for its diversity: peaceful lakes, pine forests, cliffs, and majestic mountains punctuate the journey. Less crowded than the iconic sites nearby, Hatten allows you to fully enjoy the splendor of the Lysefjord in a more serene and authentic atmosphere.
Remarks
Parking: A new, spacious paid parking lot was built in 2024 at the trailhead. This development could increase visitor numbers in the coming years.
Best time of year to hike: From May to October, on average. See the Norway FAQ for more details.
Difficulties of the hike
The climb up Hatten is relatively short and physically accessible, but there are a few technical sections that should not be underestimated. The trail begins with a steady climb through a sparse pine forest and rocky slabs, that can become slippery in wet weather.
The cliff-side traverse overlooking the Lysefjord is magnificent, yet exposed. While the tricky sections are well equipped with chains, a ladder, and a handrail to ensure safety, the hike is not recommended for those afraid of heights or unaccompanied children. Reliable signage and well-marked paths make it easy to find your way, even for the less experienced.
What you'll love
- Breathtaking views of the Lysefjord throughout the balcony section.
- A varied trail through pine forests, lakes, impressive rock formations, and panoramic plateaus.
- A peaceful and authentic experience, far from the crowds of nearby Preikestolen, where you can enjoy Norwegian nature in complete tranquility.
