Fløya

The most popular hike (by far) around Svolvær, and even on the island of Austvågøya. It's hard to understand why. For the classic, Instagram-able shot of the Djevelporten hanging rock? Well, maybe...

There are no real difficulties. The slopes are relatively steep, and the path is clearly visible and even well signposted (so rare in Lofoten). Beautiful views of Svolvær, the capital of Lofoten, the many lakes in the region and, to the north, the highest peaks on the island.

More details on the hike

The start of this hike is less than two kilometers from the center of Svolvær. The route begins with some fairly high steps before turning into a more traditional path. On the way up, head for the Djevelporten (Devil's Gates) rock to capture the classic photo. Then follow the ridge towards Fløya. Only climb to the summit if you're a seasoned mountaineer. The last few meters require the use of your hands, and there's no room for error. Absolutely not for those afraid of heights. Instead, continue on the wide ridge to the southwest. Here you'll find a number of fine views of Svolvær and the north and east of Austvågøya.

On the way back, you can follow the same route as on the way up, or you can choose to go down the northwest side of the mountain (the path is also well visible and not particularly difficult).
