Nesheia
The hike up Nesheia (425 m) takes you to a rounded peak overlooking the village of Nusfjord, located south of Flakstadøya Island in the Lofoten. As you climb, you will gradually reveal an almost desert-like granite landscape, which is very rare in the archipelago. The hike offers magnificent views of Lake Storvatnet, the impressive cliffs of Stjertinden and Bjørntinden, and the western part of Vestvagøya Island.
This route is not very busy and will reward you with a fabulous, unobstructed panorama of the sea and mountains from the summit.
Remarks
Best time to go: Mid-May to mid-October on average. See the Norway FAQ for more details.
Access: Park in the lot on your right when coming from the north, about one kilometer before reaching the village of Nusfjord. A few dozen meters to the north, on the other side of the road, you will find the trail (a sign indicates Napp, Kilan).
Difficulties and description of the hike
The trail is generally easy to follow, but a GPS tracker may be useful during the second half of the hike when several parallel trails appear. The main difficulty is staying on the right path and avoiding the wrong trails. If you encounter a difficult passage, turn back; you have likely left the correct route.
The slopes are not particularly steep, but you will climb a series of small hills before reaching the summit. Two small, easy climbing steps at the top will lead you to the summit, where you can enjoy the exceptional view.
What you'll love
- The magnificent views along the route, including Storvatnet Lake and the impressive cliffs of Stjertinden and Bjørntinden.
- The remarkable panorama from the summit, with splendid views of the village of Nusfjord below, the highest peaks of the island, and the southern coast of Vestvagøya.
- The tranquility of this rarely used trail and the lunar landscape contrasting with the blue of the fjords and ocean.
