Nesland to Nusfjord Hike
Hike overview
The hike from Nesland to Nusfjord is an iconic coastal crossing in the Lofoten Islands of Norway. Starting in Nesland, a charming hamlet that feels like the end of the world, the route leads to the famous village of Nusfjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, via a historic old fishermen's trail. Although this coastal hike is a classic in the Lofoten Islands, it is not as easy as one might imagine, with its fair share of surprises!
Remarks
Best time to go: May to October on average. See the Norway FAQ for more details.
Please note: This hike is perfect if you are looking for gentler slopes, which are rare in Lofoten. It will take you to two charming, traditional villages. However, the coastal trail itself is fairly standard with no particularly striking views.
Difficulties and description of the hike
This coastal route is more challenging than one might expect. From a physical standpoint, there is a relentless series of short ascents and descents totaling more than 500 meters of elevation gain. Technically, the trail has several challenging sections, including a scree composed of large boulders and sections with ropes and ladders. Although these sections are well equipped, they require caution and may intimidate hikers who are not accustomed to rough terrain.
The trail is generally well-maintained, but it is essential to pay attention to the markings, especially in rocky areas, where you must follow the red T-shaped markings to avoid getting lost.
What you'll love
- The authentic charm of the two villages: Arriving in Nesland with its wild coastline, colorful houses, and majestic mountains in the background is simply magnificent. Then, Nusfjord welcomes you with its yellow and red fishermen's huts nestled in a picturesque harbor.
- Unspoiled coastal landscapes: The trail alternates between forest passages and sea views, offering beautiful panoramic views of the ocean and surrounding mountains.
