Sautinden and Dalheia
This magnificent hike in the heart of Austvågøya Island treats you to breathtaking views of the Lofoten Islands' highest mountain range, including Higravtindan's summit (1,148 m). The loop trail takes you up the twin peaks of Sautinden and Dalheia, where you can enjoy exceptional panoramic views of the Austnesfjord and Morfjord, as well as the archipelago's highest peaks.
Despite its beauty, this hike is rarely visited and is mainly known to local hikers. This is due to the lack of a trail for more than half of the route.
Remarks
Best time to go: June to September on average. See the Norway FAQ for more details.
Access to the trail: The starting point for this hike is in the village of Laupstad. If you're coming from the south, you'll find a parking lot on your right just before the bend and the entrance to Laupstad. Head toward the village and take the first left. The trail begins approximately ten meters after the small bridge on the right (when heading north).
Difficulties of the hike
There is only a trail for the first half of the route. However, the two peaks are visible to the east once the trail ends, making it easy to find your way in good weather. Nevertheless, navigation is the main difficulty of the hike, so it is essential to bring a GPS device with the route marked or an accurate topographic map in case of bad weather.
There are no other major difficulties. The terrain is accessible and does not present any technical challenges. The slopes are steep in places but within the average range for hikes in the Lofoten Islands. The vegetation is relatively low and sparse, allowing you to progress without much difficulty. However, be aware that, in the absence of a trail, the physical effort required is greater than it would be on a conventional route.
What you'll love
- A magnificent panorama of the highest peaks in Lofoten with 360° views stretching from Morfjorden Bay in the north to the Higravtinden mountain range in the southeast. From this unique vantage point, you can see the archipelago's giants, which rise to over 1,100 meters.
- Tranquility guaranteed: Here, silence reigns supreme. Far from the crowds on popular trails, you can enjoy panoramic views in absolute calm.
