Fløyen and Blåmanen
Discover an iconic and popular hike in Bergen, connecting the famous Mount Fløyen to the wilder summit of Blåmanen. With easy access from the city center—including the option of taking the Fløibanen funicular—this route quickly immerses you in the unspoiled nature of the Norwegian mountains.
Enjoy spectacular, panoramic views of the city, fjords, and surrounding peaks on this excellent half-day getaway. The route is very popular up to Mount Fløyen due to its accessibility. Then, it becomes quieter and more authentic as you head towards Blåmanen, offering a real nature break in the immediate vicinity of the city.
Remarks
Flexible itinerary: For a shorter, more accessible route, you can take the Fløibanen funicular to Fløyen and just walk the loop around Blåmanen. This cuts the total distance and elevation gain in half, while still allowing you to take in most of the natural scenery.
Best time of year to hike: From May to October, on average. See the Norway FAQ for more details.
Difficulties of the hike
This route does not present any technical difficulties. It starts on wide gravel tracks between the starting point in town and the Brushytten Refuge (located approximately halfway). Beyond that point, you will be on more traditional, relatively unfrequented mountain trails.
Navigation is easy until the summit of Fløyen but becomes less clear thereafter. Although there are a few signposts, it is essential to have a precise map or GPS device to avoid getting lost, especially in foggy or rainy weather.
What you'll love
- An unforgettable panoramic view over Bergen, the old Bryggen district, the bustling harbor, the fjords, the ocean, and the surrounding mountains.
- A central and convenient starting point, just a stone's throw from the fish market and Bryggen: no need for transportation, the hike starts right in the city!
- Picturesque mountain lakes dot the loop to Blåmanen, providing the perfect spot for a contemplative break.
- A real breath of fresh air and a relaxing nature getaway that contrasts nicely with the hustle and bustle of Bergen, yet so close by.
