Langfoss
Discover Langfoss, an impressive 612-meter-tall waterfall located in Vestland County, Norway. This short but challenging hike takes you to the top of Norway's fifth-highest waterfall and to a halfway viewpoint where you can experience the deafening roar of the water up close. Your efforts will be rewarded with breathtaking views of the Åkrafjord, mountains plunging into its deep waters, and the distant silhouette of the Folgefonna glacier.
Remarks
Best time of year to hike: From May to October, on average. See the Norway FAQ for more details.
Difficulties of the hike
Prepare for an intense, short route with over 600 meters of elevation gain in less than two kilometers. The climb winds its way through a dense forest on an old alpine path until reaching an altitude of around 500 meters. About halfway through the route, you'll have the opportunity to take a short detour and enjoy an immersive experience close to the waterfall. Expect the ground to be wet and muddy due to the powerful spray. One positive and relatively rare feature of the route is that it is clearly marked and easy to follow.
What you'll love
- The opportunity to get up close to the waterfall, halfway up, and feel the full force of the elements.
- The panoramic viewpoint from Vardahaugen, at an altitude of 620 meters, offers breathtaking views of the Åkrafjord, the surrounding peaks, and the distant Folgefonna glacier.
- The striking contrast at the summit: After experiencing the power of the falls, discover the tranquility of the old mountain pasture of Langfosstølen. There, a river winds peacefully through an idyllic setting.
