Bondhusdalen
Immerse yourself in the breathtaking landscapes of Norway with a hike through the Bondhusdalen Valley, a gem of Folgefonna National Park. This popular route gently leads you to the shores of Lake Bondhusvatnet, famous for its striking turquoise waters. Admire the reflections of the Bondhusbreen glacier and the towering mountains surrounding you. It's like a real-life postcard scene unfolding before your eyes!
Remarks
Best time of year to hike: From May to October, on average. See the Norway FAQ for more details. Outside this period, snow and mud can make access more difficult and less enjoyable.
Parking: There is a large car park at the start of the hike. Parking is subject to a charge: indicative price of NOK 100 in 2025.
Difficulties of the hike
The route to Lake Bondhusvatnet primarily follows the "Isvegen" (Ice Road). Built in 1863 to transport ice from the Bondhusbreen glacier to the fjord for export, this historic road is now a wide, well-maintained gravel path. Its gentle, steady slope makes the beginning of the hike accessible to everyone, including those with limited mobility.
Once you reach the lake, the trail continues along the shore on a more traditional path. This section is flat and does not present any technical challenges. For those who wish to get closer to the moraine, it is possible to climb about 120 meters to get there. Please note that the glacier has receded considerably over the decades and is only partially visible from this point. Though this last section is technically easy, it is on slightly more uneven terrain and is not marked.
What you'll love
- The magnificent natural setting of the Bondhusdalen valley: steep mountains, forests, rivers, and waterfalls.
- The charm of Bondhusvatnet: an emerald-colored glacial lake that is perfect for contemplation or photography.
What might be less appealing
- The view of the Bondhusbreen glacier's front is now limited as the glacier has significantly receded in recent decades. Hikers should not expect to see the spectacular sight of icebergs calving into the lake.
- The trail can be very busy, especially during the summer months.
