Tverrfjellet Hike
Hike overview
The hike up Tverrfjellet (490 m) leads to a small peak on the island of Moskenesøya in the heart of the Lofoten Islands. The climb offers exceptional, panoramic views of Selfjorden and Stormarkpollen Bay, as well as the sharp, characteristic mountains of the Norwegian archipelago.
The rarely used route crosses a particularly wild part of Moskenesøya Island. Hikers can enjoy a peaceful interlude far from the hustle and bustle of tourist trails while taking in spectacular and varied landscapes.
Remarks
Best time to go: June to September on average. See the Norway FAQ for more details.
Start: There is a small parking lot at the end of the road along Selfjorden.
Difficulties and description of the hike
The main difficulty is navigation. There is a well-defined trail for the first half of the route, but the rest is off-trail.
The path is almost flat for the first two kilometers alongside Stormarkpollen Bay and passes through a marshy area. Then, the ascent begins toward Lake Fageråvatnet through a birch forest. From this point on, there is no trail, so you must head east while avoiding areas that are too steep. It's not particularly difficult, but a good sense of direction is recommended.
What you'll love
- The panoramic view from the summit reveals Selfjorden and Stormarkpollen Bay, with the magnificent cliffs of Brasråstindan, Ulvstinden, and Kitinden in the background.
- The wild and unspoiled atmosphere of this less-frequented part of Lofoten.
- The sense of adventure that comes with an off-trail route.
