GR20 Stage 7 – Manganu to Petra Piana

Hike overview

The seventh stage of the GR20 north-south trail connects the Manganu (1,600 m) and Petra Piana (1,842 m) mountain huts through spectacular high-mountain scenery. Often referred to as "the mountain lakes stage," this day is one of the most beautiful on the route. Hikers will cross the legendary Capitello pass at an altitude of 2,225 meters and enjoy breathtaking views of the Melo and Capitello glacial lakes.

Although relatively short, this stage is particularly technical and demanding. It includes a sustained climb, exposed ridge passages, and a steep descent to the refuge, all within a striking mineral environment.

Remarks

Monte Rotondo extension: If you arrive at the Petra Piana refuge early in the morning, the ascent of Monte Rotondo (2,622 m), Corsica's second-highest peak, is a remarkable extension that takes around four hours there and back from the refuge. This challenging hike will reward you with an exceptional panorama at the summit.

Difficulties and description of the hike

The hike is difficult due to the rocky and uneven terrain, with a total elevation gain of 850 meters and a total elevation loss of 610 meters over 8.2 kilometers.

The ascent begins with a 600-meter climb over three kilometers from the Manganu refuge to Bocca alle Porte (also known as the Capitello breach), which is the stage's highest point at 2,225 meters above sea level. First, the trail crosses a small pozzine plateau, then it tackles scree slopes and smooth rock slabs, which are particularly slippery in wet weather.

Then, the trail continues under the ridges, linking several passes and technical sections, including a delicate rock face equipped with chains. At every turn, the panorama is majestic, confirming that this stage is one of the most spectacular of the GR20. The terrain remains challenging, with alternating technical ascents and descents along ridges to Rinoso Pass and then to Bocca Muzzella (2,206 m).

The final descent to the Petra Piana refuge is on a steep but easy trail with a drop of over 300 meters, which can be hard on the knees and joints. At the beginning of the season (May and June), snowfields may be present on the trail, making some sections dangerous and requiring the use of crampons.

What you'll love

  • The spectacular panorama from the Capitello breach with a bird's-eye view of the Melo and Capitello glacial lakes nestled in a grandiose rocky cirque.
  • The ridge crossing between the breach and Bocca Muzzella, which offers exceptional views of the Restonica Valley and the peaks of the Rotondo Massif.
  • The striking high-mountain environment with its grandiose mineral landscapes, rocky cirques, jagged peaks, and numerous lakes.
