Sandwood Bay Hike
Hike overview
The Sandwood Bay hike takes you to one of Scotland's most beautiful beaches, located in the remote region of Sutherland in the far northwest of the country. This untamed bay boasts a stunning 1.6-kilometer stretch of golden sand, bordered by vast dunes and dominated by the awe-inspiring silhouette of Am Buachaille, an impressive rock stack that rises from the Atlantic Ocean.
This magnificent setting must be earned; there are no roads leading directly to Sandwood Bay, and it can only be reached by walking over six kilometers. Despite its popularity, the beach remains peaceful because it is large enough that it never feels crowded.
The route, on the other hand, is surprisingly monotonous. It is flat, unvaried, and rather austere, which is surprising for such a beautiful region. However, the effort is well rewarded: once you arrive, the spectacle of the bay erases the fatigue and monotony of the journey.
Remarks
Parking: There is a large, free parking lot at Blairmore with toilets and a donation box for the John Muir Trust, which manages and preserves the site.
Bivouac: Wild camping is permitted at Sandwood Bay, allowing you to spend an unforgettable night facing the ocean.
Difficulties and description of the hike
