Tømmerrenna
The Tømmerrenna hike is an unusual and memorable way to explore a four-kilometer-long former log flume near Vennesla in southern Norway. Built between 1952 and 1957 to transport logs to the Otra River, it is now the only structure of its kind in Norway.
Imagine an exciting ride like something from an adventure park. You will travel through the heart of this wooden chute, winding through lush forests and overlooking rushing rivers. You will even pass through tunnels! This walk is accessible to a wide audience, including families, and perfectly combines the discovery of Norwegian industrial heritage with a memorable adventure.
Remarks
History of the site: The Tømmerrenna, or arboriduc, was designed to solve a problem. Following the construction of a hydroelectric dam and a reduction in water flow, timber floating had become impossible on a section of the Otra River. From 1952 to 1957, this wooden slide was built to transport logs using a controlled water current. It remained in service until 1981. Now restored, this feat of forestry engineering has become an exceptional hiking trail and an iconic symbol of Norway's industrial heritage.
Best time to visit: April to October, though hiking is possible year-round. It is strongly advised not to take this route on windy days or in winter, in case of snow or ice.
Equipment: Don't forget to bring a headlamp or use the flashlight function on your smartphone when passing through the tunnel.
Difficulties of the hike
This route is easy and accessible to most people: the trail is almost flat, with no significant elevation gain, and all you need to do is follow the slide to stay on track. However, there are a few points to watch out for:
- Narrow, dark tunnel: a passage of about 100 meters long, dark and low (about 1.30 meters), requires you to crouch down. A headlamp or cell phone flashlight is essential.
- Aerial crossings: some sections are suspended above the river and may be daunting for those afraid of heights, especially if the slide sways as other hikers pass by. Avoid this hike in strong winds.
- Missing boards: Although the structure is well-maintained, a few boards may be missing here and there. Always watch where you put your feet.
What you'll love
- Enjoy a truly unique hiking experience on a historic wooden structure, with the unique sensation of walking on an old “log river.”
- The thrill of adventure as you cross several tunnels and two spectacular suspension bridges for breathtaking views of the Otra River.
- A haven of unspoiled nature: the slide runs alongside the river and reveals numerous waterfalls in the heart of a lush forest.
