Via Ferrata Sass Rigais

Hike overview

Sass Rigais (3,025 m) shares with Furchetta the title of highest peak in the Odle/Geisler range, both located within the Puez-Odle Nature Park. This loop hike links two easy via ferratas — the Southwest via ferrata on the ascent and the East via ferrata on the descent — which meet at the summit.

The route should not be underestimated: while the via ferratas are technically easy, the approach and descent include long, tricky sections on steep terrain, making this route suitable only for experienced hikers.

Remarks

Col Raiser cable car: the hike begins at the top of the Col Raiser cable car, departing from Santa Cristina, open from late May to late October. Indicative price in 2026: €34 round-trip per person. Check operating hours on the official website colraiser.it.

Parking: paid parking is available at the base of the Col Raiser cable car. The cost is approximately €1.50 per hour for the first three hours, and then it is on a sliding scale.

Equipment: helmets, harnesses, and via ferrata lanyards are required.

Ideal period: from mid-July to late September. At the beginning and end of the season, check for any remaining snowfields in the couloirs and on the cable sections.

Description and difficulties of the hike

The paradox of this route is that the via ferrata is rated as easy while the unequipped sections are often more challenging than the cable-assisted passages. The approach and descent trail alternates between rock slabs, exposed ledges, and long stretches over scree and loose gravel. You will often need to scramble on steep, sometimes dizzying, slopes.

From the top of the Col Raiser cable car (2,100 m), take trail no. 4A northward, then branch off onto trail no. 2B heading east. This trail runs along the southern rock faces of the Odle group in an already spectacular setting, and leads to the foot of the massif at Plan Ciautier in about an hour. There, several routes converge. Follow trail no. 29, which climbs toward Forcella de Mesdì up a steep side valley. Before reaching the pass, bear right toward the via ferrata. However, it still takes a good half hour of walking over technical terrain to reach the first cables.

Once equipped with a harness and helmet, you can tackle the cable section, which has a few rock steps, but nothing too difficult. The route is marked with red dots that you must follow carefully to avoid straying onto a more committing path. From Plan Ciautier, it takes about two and a half hours to reach the summit cross.

After enjoying the magnificent panorama from the summit, you descend via the east via ferrata on the other side. It begins with a steep, equipped section and opens onto the Val Salieres scree, which you descend via a long, steep slope of loose gravel. Then, you join Trail No. 13, which descends toward the Firenze Hut (2,040 m). To return to Col Raiser, follow Trail 4 through meadows and pastures.

What you'll love

  • The 360° panorama from the summit, which includes the jagged peaks of the Odle, the Sella, and the Sassolungo, as well as the Val di Funes below.
  • The approach through the Pieralongia alpine pastures, which offers a beautiful transition between the green pastures of Col Raiser and the rocky landscape of the Odle.
  • The relatively light crowds along the entire route despite the popularity of the nearby Seceda area.
