Ásbyrgi Canyon Lake Hike

Hike overview

Ásbyrgi Canyon, a spectacular natural wonder shaped like a horseshoe, is approximately 3.5 kilometers long and 1.1 kilometers wide. Geologists estimate that the canyon formed around 10 million years ago following a massive flood caused by a volcanic eruption under the Vatnajökull ice cap.

This short walk takes you through a lush forest of birch and willow trees to the emerald waters of Lake Botnstjörn at the bottom of the canyon. This type of vegetation is rare in Iceland. Basalt cliffs reaching 100 meters in height frame this bucolic and enchanting place.

Difficulties of the hike

This very easy, accessible hike presents no particular difficulties. The well-maintained trail is clearly marked and runs on almost flat terrain with a minimal elevation gain of about 50 meters.
