Preshal Hills
The Preshal Hills, located near the beautiful Talisker Bay, are a fascinating geological curiosity, with basalt columns that resemble an organ. From there, you can enjoy breathtaking views of the coastline and its imposing cliffs, in a wild and unspoilt environment.
Although the elevation gain is moderate, the effort is nonetheless significant, as the route is largely off-path over very marshy ground and high grass. It also requires a good sense of direction or the use of a GPS device.
More details on the hike
A small car park with a few spaces at the end of the road leading to Talisker marks the start of this walk. Take the track down to the bay. Before reaching the beach, you will notice a grassy slope leading to the top of the cliffs to the south. Although the slope is steep, it does not present any major difficulties provided that you make a few switchbacks. The aim now is to walk along the cliffs until you reach the same latitude as Preshal Beg, just after the Biod Ruadh hill (280 m). Occasionally you will come across traces of footpaths or sheep tracks. The area is very boggy, so it's hard not to come back with wet feet if you don't have waterproof footwear. However, the coast offers magnificent views and a very wild nature that will more than reward your efforts. As you approach Preshal Beg, you can see the many columns that form its base, a particularly unique sight. To reach the top of Preshal Beg (345 m), walk around it to find yourself on its south-east face. There are cliffs in every other direction.
Note that this first part is the most beautiful part of the hike. If you run out of time, you can return to Talisker either by following the same route as you came, or by going straight on (avoiding as far as possible the boggy areas...) to the point where you reached the top of the cliff. Alternatively, continue the loop to the second summit, Preshal More (320 m). Although there are fewer columns here, the view from the top is still spectacular! To get back down to the road, there is a steep but grassy slope near the summit. Finally, take the road back to the starting point.
