Eldgjá canyon

Eldgjá, meaning “canyon of fire” in English, is part of a 40-kilometer-long chain of volcanic craters and fissures stretching northeast from the Katla volcano to the Vatnajökull ice cap. Eldgjá itself is the eight-kilometre-long gorge in the middle of the fissure. This gigantic fissure was shaped by a colossal eruption around 939 A.D., ranked among the largest of recent millennia.

As well as marvelling at the canyon itself, this tour invites you to discover the magnificent Ófærufoss waterfall. This multi-level waterfall resonates in the midst of this striking and devastated landscape.

This hike is accessible to all, and follows an excellent marked trail. Enjoy the privacy of this route, where you'll come across very few hikers, especially on the upper reaches of the canyon. Most visitors simply make the round trip to admire the Ófærufoss waterfall.
