Diamond beach
Diamond Beach is a magnificent stretch of black sand on the south coast of Iceland, right next to the famous Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon. Its evocative name comes from the icebergs of all sizes that wash up on the beach, shining like diamonds in the daylight.
These blocks of ice come from the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier, an ice tongue of the Vatnajökull, Europe's largest glacier. This glacier is constantly releasing icebergs into the Jökulsárlón lagoon, which end up on Diamond Beach. The spectacle is both magnificent and ephemeral: every day, the beach is completely transformed. The natural ice sculptures change shape, some melting while new ones are washed ashore.
It's important to note that the quantity of ice blocks varies enormously from one day to the next. To avoid disappointment, don't expect to see large quantities of ice every time you visit. However, whatever the day of your visit, Diamond Beach always offers a unique and memorable spectacle.
