Sukkertoppen
Overlooking the charming village of Hamn, the Sukkertoppen hike offers a true immersion in the wild landscapes of Senja Island in Norway. This climb reveals breathtaking panoramas of the numerous islets of Bergsforden, which display a dazzling array of colors on clear days.
The route is notable for its diversity, offering spectacular scenery from start to finish with lush vegetation, high-altitude lakes, constant sea views, and rugged ridges.
Remarks
Best time to go: June to September on average. See the Norway FAQ for more details.
Departure: The starting point is located approximately one kilometer west of the village of Hamn. There is another access point a few hundred meters southeast of Hamn, but the trail is less clearly marked, and there is no designated parking area for hikers.
Difficulties of the hike
The beginning of the trail passes through dense vegetation, which is often muddy due to the region's frequent rainfall, until reaching Lake Storvatnet. After that, the slope becomes much steeper, with several technical, rocky passages. One particularly exposed section is equipped with a chain; extreme caution is required in wet weather as the ground becomes slippery. Fortunately, the trail remains clearly visible and well marked throughout, making navigation easier.
Safety tip: If you are afraid of heights or conditions are wet and slippery, don't hesitate to turn back before the most difficult sections. The view is magnificent throughout the ascent, and reaching the summit only enhances the already impressive spectacle.
What you'll love
- The breathtaking view from the summit of the Bergsøyan islets, northern Senja, the many high-altitude lakes, the Helland cirque, and the ridge.
- A hike that first winds through lush terrain before gradually opening up to magnificent panoramas.
- The opportunity to admire the midnight sun in the summer and sumptuous sunsets from an ideal position.
