Arkle
The Arkle hike takes you to the summit of a spectacular mountain in the Sutherland region of the Scottish Highlands, in the far northwest. Composed mainly of quartzite, this siliceous rock gives Arkle its distinctive bright white hue, making it immediately recognizable in the landscape.
From the summit, you can see the neighboring mountains of Foinaven and Ben Stack, as well as the extraordinary mosaic of lochs and lochans that characterizes this remote part of the Highlands.
Difficulties of the hike
Arkle is a considerable challenge. With a round-trip distance of over 17 kilometers and an elevation gain of 950 meters, this route requires excellent physical conditioning and is largely off-trail. After an easy approach on a wide track, the ascent of the first peak (758 m) is entirely off-trail, first through heather and then over increasingly rocky terrain consisting of gravel and quartzite boulders. Although the slope is wide, the lack of markings and the terrain's nature require constant vigilance. In bad weather, orientation becomes particularly tricky, especially on the upper plateau, where landmarks are scarce.
The summit ridge leading to the main peak has a narrow, exposed section about 50 meters long where a few passages require the use of hands to safely proceed. There is no option to descend on the other side; you must return via the same route, crossing back over the ridge and the eastern peak.
What you'll love
- Extraordinary panoramic views from the summit of the iconic mountains of northwestern Scotland, including Foinaven and Ben Stack, as well as the unique landscape of lochs and lochans dotting the region.
- The remarkable geological composition of bright white quartzite, which gives the mountain its distinctive and photogenic appearance.
- Guaranteed solitude: This challenging, isolated hike attracts few people, allowing you to fully enjoy the wilderness of the Highlands.
