Ben Hope

The ascent of Ben Hope leads to the summit of Scotland's northernmost Munro, a peak over 3,000 feet (914 meters) high. Towering over the desolate moors and waters of Loch Hope, this isolated mountain offers exceptional panoramic views of the Northern Highlands from its vast summit plateau. On a clear day, views stretch as far as the Orkney Islands.

Difficulties of the hike

The ascent of Ben Hope is short but demanding, with an elevation gain of around 930 meters over 7.5 kilometers round trip. From the very first steps, the slope rises steeply and offers no respite until the summit.

While the trail is not marked, it is generally well-defined and easy to follow thanks to the numerous cairns along the route and the high number of hikers.

What you'll love

  • The spectacular panoramic view from the summit: From there, you can see the vast wilderness of Sutherland to the north, Ben Loyal to the east, and the sparkling waters of Loch Hope and Loch Eriboll below.
  • The feeling of isolation and immensity: Ben Hope stands alone in this moorland and loch landscape.
