Monte Mondeval Hike
Hike overview
Rising to 2,455 meters, Monte Mondeval offers magnificent views of the major peaks of the Dolomites, while remaining away from the bustle of Passo Giau, the starting point of the hike. The route begins with a gentle ascent to the vast alpine pasture of the Mondeval plateau, dotted with erratic boulders, before gradually gaining elevation towards the rounded summit.
Less popular than its northern neighbours, such as Nuvolau or the Cinque Torri, this hike takes place in a peaceful setting with equally stunning vistas.
Remarks
Parking: Free spaces are available along the road to Passo Giau, one of the busiest mountain passes in the region. In high season, these fill up very quickly, so plan to arrive before 8 a.m.
Description and difficulties of the hike
From the Passo Giau trailhead, follow trail no. 436 (Alta Via 1) towards Forcella Giau. The route is initially almost flat and crosses Forcella di Zonia and then Forcella de Col Piombin, running along the slopes of Col Piombin. It then descends briefly before climbing more steeply towards Forcella di Giau (approx. 2,360 m) – the steepest ascent of the route, though there are no real technical difficulties. A few rocky sections with smooth stones may be slippery in wet weather.
At Forcella di Giau, leave Trail 436 and turn right. Follow the unmarked but well-defined narrow path as it descends briefly towards a jumble of boulders and then on to the tiny Lago delle Baste, located at the foot of Monte Mondeval. Navigation is not a problem in clear weather: Monte Mondeval is visible at all times. The final ascent is up a steep grassy slope with no technical sections.

- The tranquillity of the Mondeval plateau, away from the crowds on the northern slopes of Passo Giau.
- The pastoral atmosphere of the plateau with its alpine pastures, erratic boulders, marmots and grazing herds.
