Reynisfjall Hike
Hike overview
The Reynisfjall hike takes you to the top of a small mountain that overlooks the village of Vík in southern Iceland. This natural viewpoint boasts panoramic views of Reynisfjara's long black sand beach, the impressive Reynisdrangar rock formations rising from the ocean, the Dyrhólaey peninsula, and the vast Atlantic Ocean.
Reynisfjall is also home to a diverse bird population, including puffins that nest on its cliffs from June to August. Despite the popularity of the surrounding sites with tourists, this hike remains quiet.
Difficulties of the hike
The loop route has no significant technical challenges and features a moderate elevation gain of approximately 300 meters. The trail is not marked but is relatively easy to follow. On the way there, you will follow a wide, winding path that gradually ascends from the outskirts of Vík to the summit of Reynisfjall.
The return journey is along a mountain trail that runs along the top of the cliffs. There are a few slightly exposed and vertiginous sections on the mountainside that require particular attention, especially in windy weather.
What you'll love
- A unique view of iconic sites: From the summit, you can admire the Reynisdrangar basalt formations, Reynisfjara black beach, and the Dyrhólaey peninsula.
- Puffin watching: Between June and August, the cliffs are home to these iconic seabirds, offering great photo opportunities.
- The tranquility of the place: Unlike Reynisfjara Beach, which is often crowded with tourists, this trail remains remarkably uncrowded.
