Spar cave
Spar Cave, located near Elgol on the Isle of Skye, is only accessible for one hour on either side of low tide, for a total of approximately two hours. Therefore, it is important to plan this hike carefully to avoid getting trapped and having to wait twelve hours. The geological formations around and inside the cave are magnificent.
Remarks
Parking: There are a few spaces on the side of the road before the cattle barrier near Glasnakille.
Tides: This hike is only possible for about two hours in total (one hour on either side of low tide). It is highly recommended that you arrive at the shore about an hour before low tide, visit the cave immediately, and allow time for the return journey. Check the tide times.
Equipment: A headlamp is essential for safely exploring the cave.
Difficulties and description of the hike
Although this hike is very short, it presents some technical difficulties. The descent to the shore is steep, and the walk along the coast is tricky due to the rocks covered with slippery seaweed. After crossing an impressive gorge, you will reach the cave's entrance, which is marked by the remains of an ancient stone wall.
Inside the cave, you must climb two steep natural calcite staircases to reach the upper part. Although these formations appear slippery at first, they actually offer excellent grip.
What you'll love
- The spectacular calcite geological formations that cover the interior of the cave
- A real exploration adventure far from Skye's classic tourist sites, in a preserved environment.
- The remarkable maritime setting: Narrow gorges and vertical walls over 40 meters high.
