Geysir
Discover Geysir, an iconic geothermal site located on the Golden Circle, in the Haukadalur valley in western Iceland. Geysir is also the geyser from which all other geysers take their name, derived from the Icelandic word ‘gjósa’ meaning ‘to gush’. However, it is rarely active these days, and its eruptions have even stopped for some years.
The Strokkur geyser now takes over and offers an impressive natural spectacle. Every 5 to 8 minutes, it shoots water up to a height of around 30 metres. Be prepared as this extraordinary phenomenon only lasts a few seconds!
As you walk around the site, you'll be surrounded by numerous fumaroles, mud pools and hot springs, adding a magical dimension to your visit. Be aware, however, that Geysir attracts many visitors every day and is one of the busiest tourist sites in the country. This may come as a surprise after a visit to the nearby Highlands!
