Grafarkirkja Church

Grafarkirkja Church

Built in the late 17th century, the turf-roofed church of Grafarkirkja is Iceland's oldest church, and one of the few to feature ornamentation. Baroque motifs adorn some of the supporting rafters, and the altar is renowned for its religious carvings. Shortly after its construction, the church was deconsecrated and used as a tool shed for many years.

In order to preserve it, it is no longer possible to visit the interior of the church, but you can still walk around it and admire it from the outside.
