Lago Federa Hike

Hike overview

The Lago Federa hike is a round-trip route to one of the most beautiful high-altitude lakes in the Dolomites. It is located at the foot of the eastern face of Croda da Lago. The lake's waters reflect the distinctive silhouette of the Becco di Mezzodì peak, and the larch trees lining its shores turn golden in the fall, attracting many photographers. It is a short and easy route, but very popular.

Remarks

Parking: Free spaces are available along the SP638 road at Ponte di Rocurto, about a 15-minute drive from Cortina d'Ampezzo. Spaces are limited, and Lago Federa is popular. Arrive before 8:00 a.m. during peak season to ensure a spot.

Best time to visit: Late June to late October, depending on snow conditions. The fall season offers a special spectacle with golden larch trees framing the lake, usually starting in mid-October. The Rifugio Palmieri remains open until the end of October, depending on conditions.

Possible extension: from the lake, you can continue on the full Croda da Lago loop, passing through Forcella Ambrizzola and then Forcella di Formin.

Description and difficulties of the hike

From the Ponte di Rocurto trailhead (approximately 1,700 m), take trail no. 437, which heads into the forest and crosses two small bridges over the Ru Curto and Ru Formin streams. It takes about thirty minutes to reach the Cason di Formin junction: take trail no. 434 to the left toward Lago Federa. The climb is steady and winds through the coniferous forest.

A viewpoint, accessible via a short detour, offers an unobstructed view of the Cristallo, the Cinque Torri, the Sorapiss massif, and the Cortina Valley. The trail then levels out, crosses a cattle gate, and traverses Val Negra before reaching Lago Federa and Rifugio Palmieri (2,046 m). For the best views of the lake and Becco di Mezzodì, follow the western shore opposite the refuge. Return via the same route.

The trail is in good condition throughout and presents no technical difficulties. Markings are limited, but directional signs are present at intersections.
